I got the fantastic opportunity to work with James when we both were at AutoZone. He’s a great mentor and manager. His deep insight and knowledge really helped the team drive the importance of inclusiveness in Design. James is a superb designer, developer, and leader. In addition, he has profound knowledge of Design Systems and how important Systematic Design is when scaling any digital products, especially in an enterprise environment.

The books say the making of a good manager is someone who can help you stay motivated, make you feel supported in your role and guide you through your career path. If thats a good manager then James is a great one! Mentor, coach, devils advocate, cheerleader, or even just a listening ear, James wore whatever hat necessary to make sure I was able to do my job successfully with my mental health intact. His expertise and ability to be empathetic and honest - and sometimes humorous - made working through even the most difficult of situations a breeze. I thought I was creative person until James Mathias walked in our office door. James is one of a kind, he can design, illustrate, code, and think strategically. His passion for doing things right is infectious. During our time together at Paramore|Redd, James constructed an excellent CSS library for our team to use. It increased our efficiency as a team and allowed us to all code with consistency.

James went far and above what we ever expected. Extremely talented, organized, and reliable.

We felt very comfortable giving James free reign on tough usability questions and subjective visual decisions; even on details as small as icons he came through and delivered a great product.

Entertainingly for the rest of us, if anyone complimented us on our company’s product, it was more likely going to be about how clean and beautiful James’ design was than anything else. It just looked better than anything out there.
