Hiring is Broken
I began a search for a new Design role on May 3rd 2019.
I wrote a resume, hired someone to refine it, and then refined it some more. I focused my resume for the roles I wanted to find.
I got rejections.
I redesigned my portfolio, and iterated on it all month. Adding new work, case studies, blogs, and more. Putting my best foot forward for the roles I wanted to find.
I got rejections.
I have 19 years experience doing the exact work I was applying for. I have a strong portfolio of examples that showcase my talent, thought process, and skills, all of them.
I got rejections.
I’m kind, genuine, hard-working, and naturally funny. People tend to like me straight away. I have legitimate charisma #humblebrag.
I got rejections.
I’m almost 45. Twenty-somethings don’t want to work with their “Dad”, even if my Dad jokes are top tier.
I got rejections.
I had interviews every week day in May. I spoke about and sold myself more in May than I did in the first 43 years of my life combined.
I got rejections and I got invitations to the next round.
I travelled, took tests, completed design exercises, wrote on whiteboards, presented my portfolio for review, and chatted and laughed with dozens of potential team mates.
I got rejections and I got offers of employment.
By May 31st I had two solid offers on the table, and received a third and fourth before I made a final decision on June 10th.
Yesterday, I accepted a new role. And hiring is still broken.
